As children, we didn’t know our father was The Star: Rishi Kapoor

Rishi Kapoor, son of legendary producer and director of Raj Kapoor says they were brought up as normal children and were unaware that he was a big star.

Rishi Kapoor along with brothers Randhir Kapoor and Rajiv Kapoor attended a special event organized named ‘The Raj Kapoor Awards for Excellence in Entertainment’ to honor their father and legendary actor Raj Kapoor.

When asked how was growing up with such illustrious father, uncles, and grandfather, Rishi Kapoor said, “We were brought up as very normal children. We were never allowed to go to film studios even though our studio was very close to where we used to live. Probably on Saturdays and Sundays when our father used to shoot we would go there. I and my siblings knew that our father is an important and big man because wherever we used to go, people saw us in restaurant or public places and there was something about our father but we didn’t know he was the star. We knew that he was an actor but we used to feel that becoming an actor is very normal thing”

Music played an integral part in all Raj Kapoor films which  has  been well received by the audience over the years, so when asked Rishi Kapoor what was Raj Kapoor’s thought process while creating music for his films, Rishi said, “A peculiar thing that he possessed that without learning, he used to play most of the percussion instruments. He used to play piano, harmonium and all the kind of rhythm instruments without learning and more than that, I feel he was very passionate about music as against today’s time when people find it tiresome to shoot a song but for him, it was a high and passion”

Talking about Raj Kapoor’s passion for making cinema, Rishi shared an anecdote from Raj Kapoor’s life, he said, “At the age of 24-25, he became a studio owner. People don’t become a studio owner at that age. He was married and had 5 kids but he kept making films. All our life my mother (Krishnaraj Kapoor) never had a house, she never had a roof above her. We were staying in a rented house all throughout till the time he made ‘Mera Naam Joker’ and when ‘Mera Naam Joker’ was about to release our studio and all our assets were mortgaged to release that film. The ultimate happened, that picture bombed and during that time, we were in severe problems. There on, he made a film called ‘Bobby’ with a new boy and a new girl.

A lot of actors were used to approach him because they wanted to work with Raj Kapoor but he was adamant that he wanted a new boy and girl for ‘Bobby’ which was huge risk after seeing failure of ‘Mera Naam Joker’ but it became super hit and that is when his friends and my uncles insisted him to buy a house. Now, one film old filmmaker wants to buy after his one film and secure himself but he did  that after being in the film industry for 28 long years in 1973 despite seeing so much success as an independent actor, producer, and director but he never bothered to have roof over his family”

When asked Rishi whether he think normalcy in the life of celebrity kids has been reduced to a larger extent, he said, “Today there is much social exposure as now there is an existence of social media and so many channels journals, weekly and websites. Now you have airport look and  chautha  look (Death ceremony) also which is simply unthinkable”

Eminent Hindi filmmakers R, Balki, Ramesh Sippy and Umesh Shukla were honored at The Raj Kapoor Awards for Excellence in Entertainment.
